Mental Health Policy Forum: Depression Agenda
A. Forum Panel Presentations
1. Introduction to the Forum: Bickman,
Leonard , Ph.D.
Dr. Bickman is Director of the Center for Mental Health
Policy and Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Public
Policy at Vanderbilt University. His research interests
include the effectiveness of mental health services for
children and adolescents, including treatments for depression.
2. Depression: A Brain Disease: Blakely,
Randy D., Ph.D.
Dr. Blakely is Director of the Center for Molecular Neuroscience
and Allan D. Bass Professor of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt
University. His research interests are in the function and
regulation of the structures that transport neurotransmitters
within the brain. His work has relevance in explaining the
biological processes of depression.
3. Antidepressant Medication: Shelton,
Richard C., M.D.
Dr. Shelton is Director of the Adult Outpatient Clinic
and Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt
University. His research interests include causes of and
treatment for both unipolar and bipolar depression. He also
has interests in bridging the research between basic and
clinical investigators for the study/treatment of depression.
4. Efficacy and Effectiveness of Depression Therapy: Hollon,
Steven D. , Ph.D.
Dr. Hollon is Professor of Psychology and Associate Professor
of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. His research interests
include the effects of psychotherapy for the treatment of
depression. He is currently conducting research on the relative
effects of psychotherapy only, medication only, and psychotherapy-medication
combinations for the treatment of depression.
5. Clinical Practice: Challenges and Opportunities Fishel-Ingram,
Pamela T. , Ph.D.
Dr. Ingram is Director of Program Development for the Department
of Psychiatry and Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine
at Vanderbilt University. She is a licensed Clinical and
Health Psychologist with special interest/training in family
therapy, trauma, adult AD/HD, and patient's difficulties
in coping with chronic illness. She also teaches many of
the psychotherapy seminars for psychiatry and psychology
residents/interns.
